Prebiotics vs. Probiotics

You’ve probably seen videos floating around calling poppi a prebiotic, or functional, soda but what does that mean? Do you want probiotics or prebiotics? What’s the difference? What are the functional benefits? We created poppi to taste great but also to be good for you. Read on to find out why poppi is such a great addition to your everyday life and healthy diet.

WHAT ARE PREBIOTICS?

We use raw, unfiltered ACV with the mother in every can of poppi. Apple cider vinegar has natural prebiotics from the fermented apples. The fermented ACV has beneficial yeast that serves as a prebiotic for healthy bacteria in the gut, essentially helping good bacteria grow as you eliminate those harmful foods that feed detrimental yeasts like candida.  Prebiotics contain pectin and are essential for good digestion. Prebiotics are essential compounds that feed on the friendly bacteria in the gut. These probiotic “backups” aren’t digested or absorbed in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract; instead, they bypass your small intestine and head straight for your colon, where they promote a healthy gut environment. Ideas for prebiotic foods: apple cider vinegar, dandelion greens, whole grain breads, avocado, peas, potato skins, allium vegetables, etc.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PREBIOTICS?

Prebiotics help keep your gut healthy and feed the good gut flora in your digestive tract, which leads to many health benefits. Here are some of our favorites:

·       Aids in digestion

·       Helps with bloat

·       Helps support a healthy immune system

·     Helps refine skin complexion, stop breakouts, and reduce inflammation

·       Feed the probiotics in your gut

·       Helps with healing your gut to improve communications between the big brain and the brain in our gut. This directly affects our mood.

WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS?

Probiotics are a combination of live beneficial bacteria that naturally live your body. There are two kinds of bacteria constantly in your body – good and bad bacteria. Probiotics are made up of the good bacteria that keep our bodies healthy and working well. The good bacteria will also help you fight off the bad bacteria. That is their main job – to help maintain a healthy balance in our bodies. If our body is full of probiotics it can help restore balance within our bodies. You can find probiotics in foods, drinks, and supplements. Fermented drinks and foods are particularly helpful (yogurt, pickles, fermented drinks, sauerkraut, kimchi, sourdough, cottage cheese, etc.)

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PROBIOTICS?

As you read above, the main purpose of probiotics are to help us maintain balance in our body. That translates into many benefits for us:

·       Supports a healthy immune system

·       Helps support a healthy heart

·       Can reduce the severity of certain allergies and eczema

·       Help reduce the symptoms of certain digestive disorders

·       May help you lose weight and belly fat

·       Promote good bacteria growth

SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN?

It means that you need both in order to maintain a well-balanced immune system, to help you fight off infections, and to promote digestion. Prebiotics and probiotics work together for your overall health. You need prebiotics to feed the probiotics (good bacteria) in your gut. The dietary fiber in prebiotics acts as a fertilizer for the good bacteria in your gut. Drinking and eating foods that contain prebiotics allow the good bacteria to reproduce, leading to larger colonies of good bacteria. All of this helps us to be a good microbe host. That’s what makes poppi a functional soda.  We know we are cute (have you seen our cans?),  but we are made of substance too!

We find the easiest, and let’s be honest, most fun way to get prebiotics into your diet is from poppi. It couldn’t be easier and the benefits are worth it. With so many flavors to choose from you can find a flavor you love. Add one to your meals or as an afternoon pick me up. There is no wrong time to take a #poppibreak.
